Live From Australia - Sydney

Cruise Notes From Mary – “Live from Australia”
Sydney, Australia - May 19, 2011

Flight from LAX to Sydney on Qantas Airlines
I flew in an Airbus 380-800. This aircraft operates in a three class configuration. First Class are individual suites. Business Class seats recline at 180 degrees, Premium Economy ( since Premium Economy is located on the upper deck behind Business Class, Premium Economy gets called to board with First and Business Class passengers), and last but not least, Economy Class, where the armrests retract only to about 3/4 of the way up.

I was initially assigned seat 87E but got “upgraded” to seat 66A which was an exit row with extra leg room but no window. I was actually thankful for this seat because although Economy class seats are in a 3/4/3 configuration, the seats are very narrow and appear to be uncomfortable for such a long flight. I will know for sure on the flight back to Los Angeles. That is unless I get upgraded to an exit row, Premium Economy, or better yet, Business class.

Sydney, Australia
I arrived in Sydney at 6:30 am. It took almost an hour to get through customs and retrieve my luggage. It took another 40 minutes to drive from the airport to the Marriott Sydney Harbor Hotel. Keep all of these times in mind if you are cruising out of Sydney and plan to arrive the day your cruise ship sails.

Now I understand why the whole world's in love with Sydney. It's stylish, it's sophisticated, it's home to some of the friendliest people on the planet. And yes, a few koalas, if you know where to look. What's not to love? This gateway to the Outback has it all: endless outdoor adventure around the harbor or in spots like the Blue Mountains. Golden sandy beaches named Bondi, Bilgola and Coogee (which are not only beautiful, but also fun to say). A bustling art and entertainment scene. Countless museums, galleries and world-class restaurants where the dishes go way beyond the local Vegemite

The One Thing You Don't Want to Miss
You've seen it in pictures; now see it in person. The Sydney Opera House is more than an architectural icon. There's over 11 acres of floor space to cover. Take in a show or just pop in to admire its stately structure; the reception and concert halls both offer amazing views of Sydney's sparkling harbor. And a stroll along the shoreline at sunset is a must!
Sporting Adventures

Water-warriors will certainly have their day at the beach. Sydney's got 34 to choose from. With golden sand and crystal water, Bondi, Bronte and Coogee are three not to be missed. Surfing is pretty popular, so pick up a board and give it a shot. If you're not feeling that adventurous, put your walking shoes on and venture out on a cliff walk.

And last but not least, do what I did – the Sydney Harbor Bridge Climb – For the Climb of Your life. I did the Express Climb which is the fastest way to the top of the Sydney Harbour Bridge and takes about 2 hours and 15 minutes. But most of the time is spent preparing you for the climb and getting all your gear together. Proceeding in small groups of no more than 20 climbers, you will climb through the inner arch of the Bridge crossing over catwalks and stairs on your way to thrilling views that await you at the summit of the Bridge.

But alas, due to safety reasons, personal items (including cameras) can not be taken on the climb. However, the Climb Leaders will take pictures of you on the Climb and at the end you will receive a commemorative Climber Certificate, Climber Cap and a complimentary group photograph, with all Climbers in the group receiving an identical photo. Great fun, but may not be suitable for those who have a fear of heights.

Shop for Bargains
If you like a little entertainment with your shopping, The Rocks Market is your spot. Street performers and local musicians will keep you amused while you wander by 150 or so vendors selling pretty much everything under the sun, or, in this case, the canopy. And you'll have your choice of pubs and cafés once you've worked up an appetite.

Local Flavor
With its premier coastal location, it's no surprise seafood's the city's specialty. You'll just have to get used to the names. Balmain bug, barramundi and leatherjacket are just a few savory suspects that will show up on your menu. Check with the local fish markets for a preview.
